Mahim Causeway

The Mahim Causeway was built between 1841 to 1846 to connect the island to Salsette with Mahim. The Swampy area between the two islands made travel dangerous and thus a need for a causeway arose. The British East India Company, who governed Bombay at that time, refused to fund the project which led lady jeejeebhoy, wife of first baronet Sir Jamsetjee Jeejeebhoy to donate the entire amount of Rs.157000 on the condition that government would not charge a toll for its use. Since then the causeway links the neighbour of Mahim to the south with Bandra to the north.

So what and where is this mahim causeway and why it is such an important place yet not heard or seen often ? Actually their was a possibility to have a toll plaza, But finally as decided it was kept free. This location is on sv road junction where mahim creek is crossed and those fascinating flyovers exits.

Towards south of Mahim causeway are 2 famous shrines which are mahim church and a dargah, and towards north starts the suburb queen Bandra. So this can be said as an connectivity point where North separates south Mumbai.

Everyday thousands of vehicle crosses this beautiful location of Mithi river bridge which has a pathway and a railing divider on the not so attractive bridge of causeway, which when reached has a lovely view of Bandra Worli Sea link and wide open Arabian Sea in west. Yet, many actually do not know what and where is the causeway and why it does not have any toll naka.

Refer the above picture which was taken from the flyover bridge and you will get the exact location of the very old Mahim causeway which has koliwada area, a local beach which usually fishermen uses and not recommended for tourists.
