Race Ground Lease : Ground originally owned by BMC and have been given on 99 years lease period to RWITC. First time the lease expired on 1994 which was renewed during 2004, which again expired in 2015 and BMC is not in any hurry for next renewal or eviction notice related process and will be deciding later, possibly after 2017 poll. The turf club pays license fees of about Rs.50 Crore yearly and the sole existence of racing ground in Mumbai also supports its 5000 employees survival in city. Queen Elizabeth II from England, King of Saudi Arab, Shah of Iran were few of the well known visitors of this place.

This speciality Horse Racing course is located very close to Mahalaxmi railway station in south of Mumbai on Western Railway Route. This open air sea front green heritage has the very famous Haji Ali Mosque and Mahalaxmi temple on sea front side and on the other side of the railway station has a famous tourist attraction called Dhobi Ghat (Biggest open air laundromat). Such is the blessed 220 acres (2.4 km) race course ground right in the heart of the city with skylines and concrete structures all around.

Racing season are between November and April’s and weekends (Saturday and Sundays) are major every year to witness the heart warming fun of Derby at the turf club which observes those elite gambling on horse riders. Note that this is the only racing ground in Mumbai to see horse racing with jockeys, with all group spectators i.e. elite group and middle class both cheering together during the race. Few Derby lovers witnesses and suggest to see the race by seating on the green grass which is a lot of fun. If you are in hurry and are one of those tourists who visits just Dhobi Ghat via the Mumbai Darshan buses, You must have the glimpse of this ground which is just few metres, stone throw distance away on opposite side of the road (See Picture On this page).

This race course ground has 2400 metres race track also have a small Polo ground in the centre. This all season green grass ground is also blessing to all locals staying around who enjoys fresh air all rushing in from the wide open sea in front (Worli area). 2 of the tracks inside welcomes senior citizens and youths visiting this ground daily early morning and evening hours for Walking, Jogging, Exercise and Yoga Enthusiasts, Runners and also are Laughing club members inside. Also is a garden open to public between morning 7:00 to 9:00 and Evening 5:00 to 8:00 for some leisure time.

Along the racing ground is also a Helipad which can be witnessed from the road outside station if lucky to see a Helicopter landing. Also have few restaurants for your hunger and crave when you feel like. Although horse racing is the primary motto and reason the ground was built in 1943, But this place also witnesses elite class weddings who can afford paying high for a beautiful open wedding in South Mumbai.
