</div>This Public library located at Rajabai Tower which is some 15-20 minutes distance from churchgate station is open to all and has some 4 to 4.5 lakhs books stores with some 15,000 odd publications and old magazines. For those looking for old Bombay gazette since 1852 till date Mumbai University Library is a perfect destination to visit.</p>
<p>The membership fees for student is Rs.200 a year and fr all other public is Rs.300 yearly, Such an amazing old times library can also be said as an old heritage of Mumbai.</p>

</div>One of the not so famous (unknown libraries of Mumbai) J N Petit library located at D.N Road in Fort is one of its kind for those who like reading rare collection of books in a natural environments of sun light and air. This library was established in 1856 by a group of parsi students studying in elphinston college of Mumbai with donation help by Bai Dinbai Nesserwanjee Petit amounted Rs.2.50 lakhs, A huge amount of that time.</p>
<p>This is one of the membership paid libraries of Mumbai with just startup fee&#8217;s of Rs.845 valid for 3 months which includes a refundable deposit of Rs. 300. Then the regular quarterly charges are just Rs.180 (i.e Monthly Rs.60 only) for a door opening to information world of this library.</p>
<p>Specialty of this J.N Petit library is that is has a very old style natural reading environments for members like Colorful designed glasses in window, Old time heavy fans, Iron pillars etc. It is said by some one that the higher the height of ceilings the better it is because the thinking level and information reading acceptance level is more compared to others. And seating of about 450 members is real good space.</p>

</div>Started during 1845 formerly known as <strong><em>Bombay Native General Library</em></strong> it got its new name <em><strong>People&#8217;s Free Library</strong></em> of Mumbai when it was merged with N M Wadia Library in 1891. During old times a Gujarati gentleman named &#8216;Damodur Gordhandas Sookhdwala&#8217; donated his property at Dhobi Talao to set up this public library which has lots of old collections like Magazines, Novels and newspapers during ancient British times. It also has lots of Biographies and Philosophies books, But mostly students and public now are interested in Novels in this reading place.</p>

<p>Since 1847, David Sassoon Library is one of the best and famous libraries in Mumbai, It was also listed among 47 classical libraries of the world in 2006. This is one of those libraries only in Mumbai which has literature in regional languages like Hindi, Gujarati and Marathi with the oldest books of the library being at 1798. The idea of few young mechanics for vision and promotion of learning and enhancing knowledge helps today&#8217;s youngsters reach this gems of the old times books.</p>
<p>Mr. David Sassoon donated Rs.60,000 a huge amount during 1863 for the construction of this classical looking library which now has about 2000 and above life members and about 300 to 400 regular annual members with Annual membership fees of Rs.1200 and for life membership the charges is Rs.10,000 (Rs.500 security deposit extra).</p>

<p>Maharashtra state&#8217;s very first high tech Digital Library in Andheri is one of its kind after the old Mumbai state central library which was established in 1947 at Town Hall Fort area. With best modern facilities this library at Andheri (East) towards Ghatkopar road is as big as Four storey where ground floor specially reserved for as children corner with lots of books in different languages, audio and VCD&#8217;s, X-boxes, toys. They can also enjoy talking books in this digital library which is one of its kind.</p>

<h2><span id="About-Library">About Town Hall Library</span></h2>
<p>Asiatic Society Of Bombay Library started in 1804 by Sir James Mackintosh along with the start up of Literary society of Bombay in those days. Its one of the paid membership libraries in Mumbai with about 25,000 to 30,000 rare collections of books that can be referred by paying Annual membership fees of Rs. 1000 to 1500. You can opt to be a life time member of this society library by paying Rs.10,000 to 15,000 with a refundable security deposit of Rs.500/- only. Members are allowed to borrow total of fifteen books and three magazines.</p>
<p>This library has a dust free air conditioned laboratory to store books which was built in 1991 whose purpose is to conserve old books and so now it is one of the famous rare collection old books library of Mumbai.</p>

Initially started with name &#8220;Transactions of the Literary Society of Bombay&#8221; which changed to &#8220;Journal of the Bombay Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society&#8221; during the period of 1841, then gain they changed the publishing title as &#8220;Journal of the Asiatic Society of Bombay&#8221; which went for long and recently, since the name of city changed to Mumbai (Formerly &#8216;Bombay&#8217;) the journal name was changed again and till date it is now &#8220;Journal of the Asiatic Society of Mumbai&#8221; which was previously &#8220;Journal of the Asiatic Society of Bombay&#8221; and this is how the final journal name and title was fixed and used till date.</p>
<h2><span id="Activities">What Asiatic Society Do ?</span></h2>
<p>The 3 major focused activities at this town hall library (Where the Asiatic is located and is a heritage structure now) is &#8216;Public Forum&#8217;, &#8216;Holding&#8217; and &#8216;Research&#8217;. Although the society is in huge loss due to fall in membership which is due to the online availability of Information, they are trying to recover the loss via various schemes like &#8216;Adopt a book&#8217; were city people helps to fund to maintain the rare collections of old books.</p>
