“Mumbai’s second international airport starts its work at Navi Mumbai located at Kopra village in Panvel area with a clean green signal to CIDCO to start project by resolving all environmental related problems and hurdles. One of its first ‘Greenfield’ international airport project has already started making revolutionary changes and growth in and around Navi Mumbai area for real estate, business and other commercial/Industrial activities..”

NMIA Sample Map Model (Source - CidcoIndia.com)

Why Second Airport ?

The 9.5 square kilometer long Panvel’s International Airport project which has already started its development work will be about 35 Kilometers from Mumbai’s first Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport. which is getting saturated as it can handle approximate 18 Million passengers only. The proposed plan has huge, luxurious and high-tech airport with much higher passenger capacity. This airport has considered much higher safety standards, best quality airport services committed to customers.

Navi Mumbai International Airport – 2 (NMIA) Details.

1140 Hectares huge area which will have 2 parallel runways.

Both side of runways will have Taxi ways too.

As approved and specified by International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) it will accommodate and will be compatible for New large Aircrafts.

Airport work already started and is located at Kopra Village (National Highway – NH4B) in Panvel which is well connected to major locations.

Navi Mumbai project was approved by the Union Cabinet in year 2007.

In April 2008, Project was refused for clearance.

Again in May 2008 ministry of environment and forests (MOEF) gave its airport project clearance.

Ministry of Civil Aviation (MOCA), GOI, State Cabinet, International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), Ministry Of Environment And Forests (MOEF) has given approval for this International airport project.

Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC) also approved project with terms that the non-aeronautical (Hotels, Shops etc) side of Airport to be shifted to another side and planting equal amount of about 400 acres of Mangroves in the area that will be destroyed because of this project. CIDCo agreed to plant about 275 hectares of Mangroves around area.

Another major concern and problem of non eco clearance to project was the 2 rivers ‘ULWE’ and ‘GADHI’ that helps equally to Navi Mumbai from saving from flood, heavy rains and droughts.

CIDCO compensated all land holders and local villagers with required amount, But still it is said thay are not very happy with the compensation they received.

First phase of airport development and completion has been given targeted date in year 2014-2015.

CIDCO (City Industrial Development Corporation) is leading the project and is proposed to be developed through public private participation.

Special Economic Zone, Thane-Belapur and Taloja industrial areas, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) are some economic activities around Kopra, Panvel area of Navi Mumbai.

Updates

Project Agency needs approval from Mumbai High Court as it needs to clean 98 hectares of Mangroves.

The car parking at this International Airport will have capacity of holding about 10000 to 11000 cars.

New jobs will be created when the airport will be operational, The Number is said as 1 lakh jobs and in next year more of a lakh.

It will be one of its kind of International airport with about 11 hangers that can hold biggest aircrafts like A380. It will also help the Aeronautical technology department.

Total number of passenger counters will be 150.
