Monsoon Magic at Powai Lake and Waterfall Dam – Mumbai

“The Artificial Powai Lake, known as ‘Talav’ in Hindi, and the overflowing Dam, which transforms into a delightful mini waterfall during the monsoon season, are two prominent attractions in this area.

Previously known as Powai Valley, this small village was surrounded by lush jungles of Aarey and the National Park on one side, with majestic mountains on the other. Today, it has been transformed into a luxurious residential township called ‘Hiranandani’.

Visitors can relax and rejuvenate themselves at the lakeside promenade or head to the Dam area to witness the mesmerizing beauty during the rainy days. This location has now become a bustling hub with renowned educational institutes like IIT and NITIE, as well as vibrant pubs, lounges, and star hotels..”

The Powai Lake

  • Historics : Established in 1891, this man-made lake was originally intended to supply fresh drinking water to the city of Mumbai. Covering an area of approximately 6.61 square meters and reaching a maximum depth of 12 meters, it soon faced issues with water quality, leading residents to seek alternative sources. Over time, a plan was put forth to maintain the lake, ensuring it remained free of silt, clean, and suitable for drinking.

Back in the days of the British Raj, the fate of Powai Lake seemed uncertain. However, despite the lack of action, the lake eventually found its way into the hands of the Western India Fishing Association, where it remains to this day. Since then, it has served as a valuable resource for both fishing and industrial water supply. Unfortunately, during that time, the lake suffered from a lack of proper cleanliness, and its disheveled appearance was a glaring oversight.

After 65 years, the Maharashtra State Angling Association stepped up with the support of strict government regulations. Since then, regular removal of sewage and silt from the water has been ensured, the iconic Indian fish (Mahaseer) has been prioritized for conservation efforts, and a wave of positive changes has been set in motion. Today, the lake stands as a stunning, pristine water body that plays a crucial role in the local ecosystem.

  • Lake Location : JVLR (Jogeshwari Vikhroli Link Road) offers a picturesque view of the lake on the left side as you approach the main signal of Aarey. It provides easy access to Saki Vihar Road, Jogeshwari, Goregaon Aarey, and Vikhroli. Not to mention, it’s located right across the upscale residential area known as ‘Hiranandani’.
  • Parking : Unfortunately, there is no designated area for parking vehicles such as bikes and cars. However, visitors have been observed parking their cars along the roadside in a safe manner. Bikes are highly recommended as they can be conveniently parked within the premises, seating area, or scenic viewing spots along the lake promenade.
  • Washrooms / Toilet : BMC has provided a public restroom near the lake area. The charges are Rs. 1 for using the toilet, Rs. 5 for washing up, and Rs. 15 for a bath. Additionally, there is car parking available near the restroom. Did you find that information helpful?

Lake Attractions

Lakeside Flora
Lakeside Flora

This serene lake is nestled within the forest area and has easy access to Aarey colony. It has transformed into a picturesque spot, perfect for unwinding and perhaps taking a leisurely boat ride. Don’t anticipate anything beyond tranquility here. Locals often visit in the morning and evening for walks and jogs, while couples, families, and friends can be seen enjoying the surroundings throughout the day until nightfall.

In the last decade, a beautifully designed promenade has been established right next to the main road on the left side when traveling from Jogeshwari to Vikhroli on the JVLR. Powai Lake has become a significant location for many locals. Despite the high sound pollution from passing vehicles on the road, we, the citizens of Mumbai, who are accustomed to such levels of noise and air pollution, still enjoy the beauty of this lake, which is also home to various fish and a few crocodiles that are seldom seen.

Powai Lake Lovers Point

A cozy kids’ play area is a must-visit spot for families here. Teens love chilling with friends, snapping selfies, and shooting fun videos. The presence of luxurious hotels such as Lakeside Chalet, Mumbai Marriott, and Renaissance Terrace Garden only enhances the charm of this waterfront.

Crocodiles (Called ‘Indian Magar’ in Hindi)

Powai Lake, as per a recent survey conducted by BMC in 2022, has revealed an interesting side to it. The survey shed light on the positive aspects of the lake, as well as the existence of a hidden and restricted lake called ‘Vihar’. Surprisingly, a total of 18 crocodiles, both adults and small ones, were counted during the survey. In the scientific world, these crocodiles are known as ‘Crocodylus palustris’. What’s intriguing is that they seem to travel between these nearby lakes using a route that is not entirely safe for them.

The fact that such a significant number of crocodiles were spotted in Powai Lake speaks volumes about the thriving nature of this waterbody. It also suggests that there might be a considerable population of crocodiles already residing in Vihar Lake and Tulsi, which are situated deep within the boundaries of the national park forest.

It’s important to note that these crocodiles are protected species by law and should not be harmed in any way. If you wish to catch a glimpse of these fascinating reptiles, the best time to do so is during the early morning sunrise. They can often be seen basking in the sun, absorbing vital vitamins, near the banks close to the Renaissance Hotel and the Campur area of IIT. Remember to observe them from a distance and avoid disturbing them. Take this opportunity to enjoy the natural beauty and harmony of witnessing these reptiles right in the heart of Mumbai.

Take a break from the hustle and bustle of life and head to the lakeside promenade for some much-needed relaxation with your loved ones. As you stroll along, you’ll come across a hidden gem known as ‘Powai Vatika’ at the far end. This spot is a must-visit, especially for photography enthusiasts, as it offers a stunning view of the Hiranandani Township Buildings against the picturesque backdrop of the lake and the bustling main road. It’s like witnessing the Queen’s Necklace at Nariman Point, but with a unique charm of its own.

With a small Ganapati temple and a spacious seating area, this place offers the perfect setting to relax and capture stunning shots of Powai Lake. It’s a picturesque and serene location that truly brings inner peace, unlike the bustling promenade area which can be a bit chaotic due to the nearby road traffic.

Moreover, this lake is a popular spot for couples, making it one of the most romantic places in Powai. From the middle section of the Lakeside promenade to the end and even at Powai Vatika, you’ll witness countless love scenes unfolding without any inhibitions. So, if you’re visiting with your family and kids, keep this in mind.

The monsoon brings an abundance of blessings to the lake’s edge, where Balsam creates a stunning display of greenery and pink purple flowers. Check out the list of fauna at Wiki for more information.

ALERT !!! Avoid attempting to leap over the fence or seating area of the promenade and entering the lush green grass patch, as it is not a stable surface to stand on. It is in fact a marshy bog, filled with water underneath, known as ‘Daldal’ in Hindi, adorned with green grass and lovely flowers (Refer to Images). Simply admire it from afar.

Powai Dam Monsoon Fun: The Waterfall

Powai Dam Waterfall
Powai Dam Waterfall

Not your typical waterfall, but rather a miniature version, resembling the overflow of water from a dam that forms a small cascade. Powai Dam holds great appeal for adventurous young individuals seeking a thrilling monsoon hangout. Before we delve further, let’s take a look at some captivating videos by vloggers.

Powai Dam is a hotspot for the adventurous souls, especially bikers and cyclists, who explore the scenic ‘Powai Garden’ (also known as ‘Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar Park’). When the dam starts overflowing, everyone flocks to catch the refreshing first drops of water.

I wouldn’t suggest that a group of families visit the Powai Dam location near the ‘Powai Garden’ area as it is not an authorized tourist destination and entering the flowing water can be dangerous. Making the effort to travel to this spot just for the view isn’t really worth it, to be completely honest. Typically, it’s the younger locals, bikers, and cycling enthusiasts who come here for a fun day-long monsoon hangout with their friends. You can get a glimpse of this charming little Dam area from the videos above.

Reaching The Waterfall Area

Address : Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Garden, 76, Saki Vihar Road, Andheri (East), Mumbai, Maharashtra 400076.

Reaching : Head from Jogeshwari to Vikhroli, once you reach the Powai Lake main signal, turn left towards Saki Vihar road. Continue on foot or by car until you spot the grand entrance gate to Powai Garden on your right. Look out for the Mithi River flowing bridge as a landmark. The park entrance is across the road. Managed by BMC, this park is free to enter. Stroll through the park and enjoy the serene beauty of the muddy forest path with minimal man-made structures.

As you pass through the gate, head to the right to find the DAM and WATERFALL section. If you continue walking straight ahead, you’ll come to a slightly elevated area with a small Dam Overflowing feature that is quite safe. This spot is popular among the local youth for taking a refreshing dip in the small pond-like area (Refer to the Image).

Best Time to Visit : Once the rain showers have subsided, the lake becomes a magnificent sight as it brims with water and spills over through the Dam area. The result is a breathtaking waterfall-like spectacle that stretches for about 50 meters. However, it’s important to remember that visiting during heavy rainfalls or after July is not advisable, as the force of the water intensifies and access to the premises may be restricted.
