Inside People’s Free Library
In 1845, the library was established under the name Bombay Native General Library. However, it underwent a transformation and was renamed as the People’s Free Public Library of Mumbai in 1891, after merging with the N M Wadia Library. Back in the day, a generous Gujarati gentleman named ‘Damodur Gordhandas Sookhdwala’ selflessly donated his property at Dhobi Talao to establish this public library.
Over the years, it has amassed a remarkable collection of ancient British magazines, novels, and newspapers. Additionally, it houses an extensive selection of biographies and philosophical works. Interestingly, the current generation, including students and the general public, seems to be particularly drawn to the novels available in this literary haven.
The library offers a variety of services such as borrowing books, interlibrary loans, photocopying, assistance with finding specific content, alerts for special issues, access to online databases, online catalog search, orientation programs, and an internet lab.
Standing tall with its sideburns and nose dismembered, the statue of John Harkness, Principal of Elphinstone College, was commissioned by ‘His Pupils, Assisted by the Leading Members of Native Community’. Nowrozjie Furdoonjei, a prominent figure recognized for championing the social and political progress of his fellow countrymen, is commemorated with yet another statue among student readers.
He lived from 1817 to 1885.John Harkness, Principal of Elphinstone College, is commemorated by yet another statue. This time, the statue was commissioned by ‘His Pupils, Assisted by the Leading Members of the Native Community’.
Within the Library, there is a table crafted from marble specifically designed for writing, bearing the inscription “In memory of F. B. Khan” along with a monogram that reads MFK.

Free Library Membership Fee Details
Step into a world of nostalgia and immerse yourself in the captivating collection of books, magazines, and old novels, alongside the timeless charm of wooden furniture. In this era dominated by digital devices and e-readers, this sight is truly a treasure worth exploring.
The reading area can be found on the first level, with an additional floor above it. Students have the option to pay Rs.200 per month, with a discounted rate of Rs.500 per quarter and Rs.1000 for a total of 6 months.
Non-student members who wish to join can enjoy the perks for a lifetime membership fee of Rs.1500. Out of this amount, Rs.1000 is refundable, while only Rs.500 is considered as fees and an entry pass.

Attention students! They have some exciting news about our timings just for you. From Monday to Friday, you can now enjoy our services from 8am all the way until 7pm. And on Sundays and public holidays, we’ll be open from 8am to 7pm, so you can make the most of your free time.
But wait, there’s more. For our other valued members, They have extended our timings to accommodate your busy schedules. Starting from Monday to Saturday, you can access our services from 9am until 8pm. And on Sundays and public holidays, we’ll be open from 9am to 1pm, allowing you to have a productive start to your day.
Calling all bookworms and magazine enthusiasts. They have a special treat for you. Our reading section will be open from 8am all the way until the afternoon. So whether you’re an early bird or prefer a leisurely afternoon read, we’ve got you covered.

Looking for the library in Dhobi Talao? It’s conveniently close to Metro Inox Cinema at Marine Lines Station (East). If you’re taking the western railway route, just hop off at Marine Lines station (the 2nd station from Churchgate) and take a short 5-minute walk to get to the library.
