Dadar Chowpatty Beach: South Mumbai’s Little Beach For Fun, Food, and Festivities

“South Mumbai is famous for being the home of the wealthy. However, in that exact location, there was once a dirty and unpleasant sandy beach called ‘Dadar Chowpatty’ until early 2013. But now, it has undergone an incredible change and is one of the top beaches, with a beautiful raised promenade viewing platform (Viewing Deck).”

Beach Location

Walk: It is easy to reach Dadar Beach, which is situated in the far west and only a 20-minute walk from the railway station. Just exit the station and continue straight on Ranade Road until you reach a junction. From there, walk straight towards Veer Savarkar Road. Once you reach the crossing of Veer Savarkar Road, you will find the entrance to the beach, which is connected to Chaityabhoomi.

Taxi and Bus: If you want a convenient option, choose a taxi ride instead. Within approximately 7 minutes, you will reach your desired location. If you prefer public transportation (BEST bus), you can explore the buses that run from Dadar station west to Chowpatty.

There are two ways to access the beach, either from the south or the north. If you’re going in the evening, it’s better to enter from the north side for safety reasons. There is a lamppost near ‘Veer Baji Prabhu Udyan’, a lovely garden that connects to the beach, which provides additional lighting. However, it’s worth mentioning that this beach is not very welcoming or clean for visitors.

Unfortunately, the seashore is filled with litter and has an unpleasant odor. It is advisable to visit before sunset, especially for girls and women in Mumbai. Although there is a police presence and it is not completely isolated, it is still important to be careful. On a positive note, you can appreciate the breathtaking view of the Bandra Worli Sea Link and relax to the calming sound of the waves crashing against the rocks.

Transformation Of Dadar Chowpatty Beach

Since 2016, there has been a noticeable improvement in the activities of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. Audits and reports from reputable news outlets like the Hindustan Times, as well as NGOs and activists, suggest that there is hope for positive changes at Dadar beach. This beach, known as Chowpatty, is small and less crowded, with a rocky terrain and a sprinkle of sand. People visit this place to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere, gentle breeze, stunning sunset, and the magnificent view of the Bandra Worli Sea Link bridge.

The beach, located on the coast, provides stunning views that enchant the senses. It has several appealing attractions that are popular among the locals, making it even more charming. Additionally, this lovely beach is conveniently close to the famous Shivaji Park, just a short walk away.

Beach Safety

Unlike Juhu Chowpatty and Girgaon beach, Swimming at this sandy beach is not safe because there are no warnings or signs about high or low tides, as well as other possible dangers and precautions.

It should be noted that this place lacks proper lighting because there is only one lamppost. As a result, it attracts smokers and drinkers, as noticed by the regular visitors from the local community. The only place to sit is at the rocky entrance on the south side of the beach, where a group of males usually occupy.

Regrettably, women often face uncomfortable stares in this situation, which makes it unsafe for them. Additionally, the lack of a lifeguard or regular police patrols increases the worries about this beach attraction.

Despite the presence of a police chowky in the area, the lighting is only turned on during two major festivals: Ganesh Visarjan days and Ambedkar Jayanti. The absence of CCTV cameras makes this beach more susceptible to illegal activities, and if any incidents occur, it becomes difficult to apprehend the culprits.

Beachside Amenities

Discover the perfect beach retreat with our exceptional amenities. Indulge in a variety of facilities crafted to elevate your seaside adventure.

This place is not safe at all, as mentioned before. There are no security cameras, no lifeguards, and very few police officers around. Every day, the garbage washes up onto the shore. There is only one trash can at the entrance, but it’s always overflowing with plastic bottles, old garlands, and more. Moreover, since Mahim Creek is close by, waste like coconuts, incense sticks, flowers, plastic wrappers, and other debris that ends up in the sea is thrown back onto this beach.

Unfortunately, there are no cozy seats available on this lovely beach if you wish to relax. The only seating options are the rocky areas, which are not family-friendly and can be quite uncomfortable. Moreover, it appears that some people are discreetly smoking and drinking alcohol, quickly concealing them when others are around.

There are no specific timing restrictions or signs indicating rules on this beach, which is surprising. But if you need to use the restroom, you can go to the beach-view deck area where public toilets are conveniently available.

On the northern side of the beach, you can find a variety of delicious refreshments like Bhelpuri Wala and Chaat Corner. Moreover, there are thrilling horseback riding choices. While there is parking available, it’s important to mention that it is located at the roadside entrance and not specifically for the beach.

Located in Dadar West, this beach is a beloved escape for the locals, serving as their main recreational spot. Despite being close to the famous open ground of Shivaji Park, this coastal treasure is in need of a significant makeover. Improvements in terms of appearance, safety, and creating a captivating atmosphere are necessary to fully appreciate the natural beauty of this promenade, making it a perfect destination for everyone to enjoy.

The Juhu Chowpatty renovation project has been successfully completed in an organized manner, thanks to the support of the BMC, local MLAs, and other contributors. The Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB) has started placing tetrapods to protect the beach sand, prevent soil erosion, and address high tide-related issues.

However, some local residents and those with sea views are dissatisfied with the unplanned installation of tetrapods. While a few individuals believe it is necessary, others argue that it obstructs the beautiful view they paid a high price for. This situation creates a sense of insecurity as these stones are sometimes used by anti-social elements for various activities.

During festivals like Ganesh Visarjan and Chhat Pooja, as well as regular visits by citizens, this beach faces a high number of visitors. However, there are no arrangements in place to handle the crowds, and the tetrapods become a major obstacle during these upcoming events.

Besides the BMC, local residents, MLAs, groups, and activists are actively engaged in supporting and planning the improvement and beautification of the beach area. Dedicated groups like Motley have been tirelessly advocating for the government to prioritize these plans and allocate funds for the required renovations.

Finally, after many tries, the work has started on the section between Chowpatty promenade and Mahim Fort. Thanks to the careful planning and design by famous architects and engineering groups like Exigo, there is now hope for this 2-kilometer long stretch. We are excited to see the new and improved view that has been imagined.

The renovation will begin this year, starting in 2015. The tetrapods have already been installed, giving us a glimpse of the future beauty of Dadar’s Chowpatty Beach.

Chowpatty Beach and Kirti College locations, heading towards Mahim Fort, are set to be renovated. With carefully planned nodes ready to be built, these areas will experience a significant transformation. Moreover, there are intentions to improve Mahim Creek, which currently receives all the city waste. However, at present, there is no specific information available about these plans.

Once the renovation is finished, this promenade will become a pleasant sight. Kids will play happily in designated play areas, while older people can relax in comfortable seating and walking areas. There will be a special zone for walking and jogging enthusiasts, providing them with a dedicated space for their activities. The presence of proper garbage facilities and clean washrooms will improve the overall experience.

In addition to its charm, the area will feature cycling paths, along with lovely flower and shrub displays. Newly planted palm trees will enhance the surroundings, while artistic elements such as paintings and the use of fishing nets and boats will maintain the natural beauty of the seafront.

During the monsoon season, citizens will have access to well-placed seating and resting areas that offer shade and a peaceful atmosphere. The flooring and paving will be carefully designed to prevent slips on rainy days, while also maintaining a stylish appearance that can withstand the force of the crashing waves.

To enhance safety, especially for women and girls who are out alone, there will be an increase in the number of guards and police patrolling the area. The promenade will be illuminated with solar lights and stands, creating a safe and welcoming environment for everyone.
